  • Uses: Gypsum is used as a building material. It can be ground into a fine powder and used to make plaster of paris, which is used in moulds, cast making and decorative applications.
  • Agriculture: Gypsum is used as a soil conditioner to improve soil structure and fertility. This helps break up compacted soil and can improve drainage.
  • Food industry: Gypsum is approved as a food additive by regulatory agencies worldwide and is used as a coagulant in the production of tofu and as a clarifying agent in some brewing processes.

Anhydrite (Calcium Sulphate, CaSO₄):

Anhydrite is the anhydrous (without water) form of calcium sulfate. It usually occurs in sedimentary rock formations and can be found in a variety of colors including white, gray or blue. Anhydrite is less common than gypsum and has a higher solubility in water.

  • Uses: Anhydrite can be used as a desiccant (drying agent) because of its ability to absorb moisture. It is also used in industrial processes such as the production of cement and in the chemical industry.

Hemihydrate (Plaster of Paris, CaSO₄ 0.5H₂O):

The hemihydrate is the partially dehydrated form of calcium sulfate. It is obtained by heating gypsum and removing some of its water content. Plaster of Paris is a common name for this material.

  • Uses: The hemihydrate is used extensively in the construction industry for mold, casting and sculptural works. When mixed with water, it rehydrates and turns into a hard material that can be shaped before solidifying.
